Project Experience - Emergency Response

Client:           Private Client

Location:      Atlanta, GA

Project Cost:      $26,000

Project Description

AECS was contracted by a private client  to respond to an emergency situation at one of its former stations where site investigation activities were being conducted, and the investigation contractor had hit and ruptured an active underground fuel product line.  Upon arrival at the site, AECS verified that the fuel flow through the ruptured line had been stopped and erected barriers around the damaged site.  The covering concrete was saw cut and removed and the soil excavated to expose the damaged pipe.  A minimal hole was excavated in order to determine the extent of the damage and resulting fuel contamination.  The free product and liquid contamination was removed from the site using a vac truck, and the contaminated soil was excavated and stored in drums for eventual transportation and disposal as petroleum-contaminated soil at an authorized facility.  As the excavation was not large enough for a line splice, an attempt was made to patch the hole, however the patch did not hold under a line tightness test, and the excavation was enlarged slightly to allow for removal of the damaged section of pipe and application of an approved splice.  Due to extremely adverse weather conditions, a non-sparking heater was used throughout the night to keep the splice heated to an adequate temperature for the splice adhesive to cure properly.  The repaired line was given a line tightness test, which it passed; the excavation was backfilled with pea gravel; and the excavation site was resurfaced with concrete.
